In these prints, we have abstracted the images - drawn the features separately to become mere components that are to be the only gestures and marks to give form to the 'portrait'.
Purely Pop, mostly drawn from polaroids that our good friend, the distinguished 60's/70's hairstylist Keith Wainwright MBE has taken of some of his most innovative styles. Keith gave us the pictures in 2011 when we discussed the early years and those marvellous early hairstyles from 1969/1970 at his first salon in Knightsbridge. We remarked on how ahead of the times those coloured hairstyles were. Some photographs were of Keith's styles for the Derek Jarman film 'Jubilee' and others were Keith's own creations. They were the styles that punk rockers established as their own in 1975 -76.
Ourselves and many other artists, writers, musicians and designers of the period would have their hair styled at Smile, even when they were completely broke, they'd go for this essential coiffure. Later in the 80's, SMILE moved to Worlds End where the Punk hardcore style had established a permanent home with Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood's "Worlds End", opened in 1980. Keith's SMILE was a few doors further up the Kings Road. Ben Kelly who had designed McLaren and Westwood's Seditionaries, also designed the new SMILE Salon.
This style for Soo Catwoman was made at 'Smile' in Knightsbridge in 1978. There is a report which says Soo's most famous "Catwoman" haircut was created in an Ealing barber shop from her own directions in 1976, She said she preferred "to go to barber shops rather than to hairdressers - I just felt more comfortable there". She says her hair styles were influenced more by Marc Bolan and David Bowie than by the Bromley Set or the Sex pistols. Her brilliant teenage styles of hair, dress and adornment continues to be a huge inspiration in the world of music, art and fashion, as striking an image today as it was in 1976.
