Often referred to as the Godfather of British Pop Art, Sir Peter Blake was born in 1932 in Dartford, Kent. He attended the Royal College of Art and in 1961 was awarded the John Moores junior art award for his work Self Portrait with Badges. Combining images of pop culture and fine art, his collages and paintings include imagery from advertisements, entertainment, wrestlers and the circus. Blake became a Royal Academian in 1981, a CBE in 1983 and in 2002 Blake received a knighthood for his services to art. Retrospectives of Blake's work were held at theTate in 1983 and Tate Liverpool in 2008.
